A Reflection on St. Bernadette

“I shall spend every moment loving. One who loves does not notice her trials; or perhaps more accurately, she is able to love them. I shall do everything for Heaven, my true home. There I shall find my Mother in all the splendor of her glory. I shall delight with her in the joy of Jesus himself in perfect safety.” – St. Bernadette Soubirous

We recently had the relics of St. Bernadette at one our local parishes. It is the first time ever that her relics have traveled across the U.S. to Catholic Churches in several states. Water from Lourdes also accompanied these incredible relics. I was able to go venerate the relics while they were here and it was a beautiful experience.

In middle school, I went to a Catholic school close to where we were living at the time which was called St. Bernadette’s Catholic Parish and School. I would say it was here that I began to really fall in love with our faith. My religion teacher I had for the two years I was there was extremely passionate about the faith and her class quickly became my favorite. Everyday I looked forward to religion class. It was also in this class where we watched The Song of Bernadette, a movie based on St. Bernadette’s life and the apparitions at Lourdes. After watching that movie, I always had a special place for St. Bernadette in my heart.

Now, all these years later, being able to be in the presence of her relics, venerate them, pray for her intercession and bless myself with water from Lourdes was a beautiful blessing I am very grateful for.
