Why I am Pro-Life

I have always considered myself pro-life. Growing up I knew that as Catholics we don’t believe in abortion and it was just common sense to me that an unborn baby in the womb is a life that should not be killed. However, once I started working at my current job, my passion for being pro-life strengthened more than I could’ve ever imagined. I began to learn more and more about the tragedy that is abortion – the laws that lead to millions of unborn babies being killed, the trauma women experience, and the lies the abortion industry tells. The more I learned about the horrors of abortion, the more my love for the unborn grew. These innocent lives being taken out of no fault of their own whatsoever.

The Bible is filled with examples of life beginning at the moment of conception in the womb. We read in Jeremiah 1:5, “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart.” Psalm 139: 13 says, “For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb.” In Isaiah 49:1 we read, “The Lord called me before I was born, while I was in my mother’s womb he named me.” In the visitation, when Mary goes to visit her cousin Elizabeth, the child in Elizabeth’s womb leaps at the sound of Mary’s voice. Our very own Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, entered into the world the same way we all do – through his mother’s womb. All these examples should be reason enough for society to defend the fact that life begins at the moment of conception in the womb.

Being fertile and having children is also a gift greatly desired in the Bible. We see many women experience barrenness and beg God for a child. Abraham’s wife Sarah, Isaac’s wife Rebekkah, Jacob’s wife Rachel, Hannah the mother of Samuel, and Elizabeth the mother of John the Baptist. Each of these women were barren, but through prayer and faith God blessed them with a child. As Psalm 127:3 says, “behold, children are a heritage from the Lord, the fruit of the womb a reward.”

Some people claim that being pro-life is only for religious people because it’s in the Bible. However, even science defends the fact that babies in utero are very much alive throughout every trimester. Science defends the fact that unborn babies can feel pain in the womb by 20 weeks gestation or earlier. And yet, there are still laws being passed allowing abortion to occur at the point in which the baby can feel pain – making their death that much more horrible. The science, medicine, and technology we have now allows for babies born early, such as 21 weeks, to thrive and live. Yet again, people try to say that babies at this stage of their lives are just a clump of cells. Look at the facts – the science – and it will show you otherwise.

Proverbs 31:8 says, “Speak up for those who can’t speak for themselves. Speak up for the rights of all those who are poor.” This is my promise I make to the unborn. To be a voice for the voiceless. It is clear in every doctrine of the Catholic Church, and even scientifically proven, that life begins at the moment of conception in the womb. These lives are innocent and I am proud to be pro-life and defend the lives of the unborn. Each of each these lives has a purpose given to them by God, our creator. Only God can determine when someone’s life is meant to come to an end. He is the author of life. Yet our society has taken it upon themselves to start making these life-ending decisions. As a pro-life movement, we must continue to make our voices heard and defend the human rights of the unborn. We have the responsibility to bring it to the attention of our lawmakers that babies in the womb are also human beings, with rights, and deserve to be legally protected. We must continue to share the truth about the horrors of abortion amidst the lies Planned Parenthood, NARAL, and so many other abortion advocates spew. These precious lives desperately need our help and we must continue to fight for them because we have been given life, and they too are deserving of life.
